Before & After San Diego Retreat - Things to Do

Things to Do in San Diego Before or After Your Retreat

If you’re joining us in San Diego for a retreat, you may want to arrive early or stay a little longer to soak in the city. With its blend of laid-back beach culture, vibrant neighborhoods, and rich history, San Diego has something for every kind of traveler. Here are some of our favorite things to do before or after your retreat:

🌊 For Relaxation & Scenery

1. Stroll Through Balboa Park
This 1,200-acre park is home to lush gardens, Spanish-style architecture, and more than a dozen museums. Even if you don’t go into a single building, the park itself is a joy to wander.

2. Watch the Sunset in La Jolla
La Jolla Cove is a beautiful spot for ocean views, tide pools, and seals sunbathing on the rocks. Grab a gelato or coffee nearby and find a spot to watch the waves.

3. Coronado Island
Just a short drive or ferry ride from downtown, Coronado is a peaceful spot with wide beaches and the historic Hotel del Coronado. Great for a slow morning or afternoon escape.

🛍️ For Exploring & Shopping

4. Little Italy
This walkable neighborhood near downtown is packed with cafes, wine bars, art galleries, and boutiques. It’s also home to one of the best farmers markets in the country (every Saturday).

5. Liberty Station Public Market
A converted naval training center that’s now a hub for food, local makers, and arts. It’s very close to the Mission Bay Resort—perfect for a quick visit without straying far.

6. Seaport Village
This waterfront shopping and dining area is touristy but charming—think street performers, kite shops, and bay views. Great for souvenirs or a casual stroll.

🧠 For Culture & History

7. USS Midway Museum
Step aboard a retired aircraft carrier and explore the hangar deck, flight deck, and living quarters of the Navy’s longest-serving aircraft carrier. Fascinating and surprisingly fun even if you're not a history buff.

8. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
A great introduction to early California history, with preserved adobe buildings, traditional Mexican food, and handmade goods. Easy to walk and browse at your own pace.

🦐 For Foodies

9. Taco Crawl in North Park or Barrio Logan
San Diego’s taco scene is legendary. These two neighborhoods offer great spots for authentic street tacos, modern twists, and everything in between.

10. Craft Beer Tastings
San Diego is one of the top craft beer cities in the U.S., with breweries like Stone, Modern Times, and Ballast Point. Many offer tasting flights and shaded patios—no reservation needed.

🗓 Planning Tips

  • Transportation: Rideshares are easy and reliable, and many attractions are a short drive from the Mission Bay Resort.

  • Timing: If you're doing something on retreat arrival or departure day, try to schedule lighter activities with minimal logistics.

  • Luggage: Ask the hotel if they’ll hold your bags before check-in or after checkout if you want to squeeze in one more outing.

San Diego is more than just a beautiful backdrop for your retreat—it’s a city worth exploring. Whether you have a few hours or a couple of extra days, you’ll find plenty to do before or after the main event.
