Industry Term: based on double occupancy

“$X based on double occupancy”. This is a frequent term used in rides, tours, hotel rooms and cruise staterooms.

  • This does not mean that it is that price for TWO people!

  • It means it is that price PER PERSON, with the caveat that you have two people participating/paying

  • If you have a different number of people participating/paying, then the price will vary

  • Often, that price is a base rate and does not include things like taxes, fees, gratuities.

Example:

“This airport transfer will cost $50 based on double occupancy.”

Potential scenarios:

  • Bob and Sue will ride together and pay $50 each, plus any taxes/fees.

  • Fred is riding alone. He will let me know so I can get a quote specific to his situation. His price will be anywhere between $50 and $100. (This is because the break-even to the company for providing that service is higher than $50.)

  • Tom, Mary, and Betty are riding together. They will let me know so I can get a quote specific to their situation. Their price might wind up at $50 each, but it is possible the third person may be at a bit of a discount.
